I love scary movies.
Especially the creepy, spooky, things-that-go-bump-in-the-night kind of scary movies. They’re just so much fun.
Know what makes a scary movie even better? A scary movie that features a really great old house.
And what better month to watch a good ghost story or creepy thriller that features a great old house than October?
These are just a few of my favorite movies to watch around Halloween – I’m not sure if it’s because I love the plot or the house (and if ghost stories are not your thing, not all of them are scary – some are just fun to watch this time of year ;))…
I watch this movie almost every year. Such a great ghost story that manages to be spooky but not scary. And the lake house it takes place in? One of the most amazing movie houses ever.
Not scary at all – but it’s such a great movie about witches. I love the quaint little town, I love the two old aunts, and I LOVE that amazing old house. And am I the only one jealous about Midnight Margaritas…?
Even though it’s dated, it’s a scary movie classic – the remake didn’t nearly compare to the original. And a house with windows that look like eyes? Creepy…
I have always found this movie to be so chilling. I’ll pass on the modern beach house where the movie starts off (although the ocean views are amazing), but that sweet little Victorian cottage Julia Roberts takes refuge in? Yes, please!
This was such a surprisingly good movie. Not scary, but definitely keeps you on your toes. And the house is awesome (sadly I couldn’t find a picture of it so you’ll have to take my word).
Probably one of the scariest movies I’ve seen. I always think what you don’t see is way more frightening than what you do – and so often scary movies show too much and then they just turn cheesy. Not this one. This movie nailed it – I didn’t like walking through my house with the lights off for days after I watched it.
Who doesn’t love the Sanderson sisters? Probably one of the best Halloween movies ever – and that house is picture perfect New England style. All of the locations in this movie are picture perfect New England style. I think I saw somewhere they’re going to remake this movie – not sure how I feel about that…
These next two are TV shows, but I had to include them…
Aside from the very last episode (the ending was kind of…”that’s it?”), I thought Season 1 of AHS was phenomenal, and they have yet to live up to that season in my opinion – I hold out hope every year, but none of the seasons since have come close – the plot was perfect, the cast was perfect (how amazing was Jessica Lange?!), and the house was beyond perfect.
Not as scary as Psycho (another classic scary movie), but so dark and so, so good. And even though the house is super creepy looking – it’s still super amazing – it is a character in its own right.
What are some of your favorite scary (or not so scary) movies to watch this time of year?
