“Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.” – Billy Baldwin
What comes to mind when you think of summer?
My mind usually goes straight to the lake first – I am a Michigan girl after all. Sandy beaches, dark blue water, lush green grass, beautiful sunsets. But even more than that it’s the feeling of long slow days, dinners cooked on the grill, backyard conversations around a bonfire, and not taking anything in life too seriously.
That’s how I wanted my house to feel too. Casual, not overdone, slightly unpolished.
And neutral, neutral, neutral.
Shocking. I know.
I just can’t help myself.
I dug around through my pillow collection, and pulled a variety of pillows ranging in shades of white, to cream, to beige, to light gray. I guess I kind of have a theme this year…
Predictable? 100 percent.
I found myself second guessing the decision at first because I’ve more or less used the same pillows (or something very similar) all year long. But those neutrals just give me all the heart eyes and I find the end result to be so relaxing and livable.
Plus, I completely shopped my own house for this little seasonal change. I absolutely love getting new things, but sometimes it’s just as much fun to pull out old stuff from the back of the closet or the corner of the basement that you haven’t seen or used in a while. It’s makes all that
hoarding collecting feel justified. 😉
To carry the neutral feel with a little dash of lakeside thrown in, I grouped a few faux succulents tucked into river rock, a candle tucked into sand, weathered wood accents, and pretty books piled on the coffee table to pull off that easy going summer vibe too.
The one and only plant from spring that I did not kill.
We have a survivor.
It was also my favorite, so I may have showed it a little extra love and attention. 😉
Total aside. I grabbed a few annuals to place in pots for the front porch over the past weekend. They were all alive and well. I planted them early one morning, and – this is no joke – some of them have already died or are very near death.
And yes, I have been watering them. I guess I really do have the magic touch…
That’s why I stick to the fake stuff, folks!
Speaking of the fake stuff, I love having these fern sprays I picked up last year (from Pier 1) scattered around the room. I’m also pretty excited about that lovely piece of texture sitting to the side.
I purchased a couple of these branches of dried grapewood from Home Goods forever ago. I loved the natural texture, but didn’t have an immediate place for them, so true to form I tucked them away in the basement and forgot about them. Out of sight, out of mind! It took some digging to unbury them from the depths of my basement décor hoarding, but once I did, I can’t believe I kept them hidden away for so long – they’re so interesting and beautiful.
I shared what’s going on over on the mantel earlier this week. It showcases some of my favorite treasures and carries the same neutral, easy feel to finish off the room.
And that’s how we’re doing summer this year. 🙂
So how about you? Do you like neutrals for summer too, or do you prefer something a little brighter with pops of color?
