So you may have heard me mention a time or two before that we have a little sun porch on the back of our house. When we first bought the house, the plan was to eventually tear it down and replace it with a back deck. The roof was leaking, the windows were old, the walls needed repair work – in other words, it had seen better days.
But…plans change. You know how it goes. 🙂
A couple of years ago, on the first warm day of the year, we were cleaning up the backyard and coming in and out of that little sun porch, and we kind of thought, hey – this might be a nice room to enjoy in the summer.
So we decided to keep it.
Jordan replaced the roof so that it would no longer leak, and then for some reason we proceeded to use it as a junk room/extra storage/wood chopping station for two years.
It’s right off the driveway, so it’s the main door we use to come and go – there was a little path leading to the house, but that’s about it. It was so full of stuff that when the windows started to fall out, I couldn’t even get to them because there was too much stacked in the way. It was a nightmare.
Then, last weekend we decided enough was enough and we cleared out all the junk. Best feeling ever!! Of course, I forgot to get a picture pre-cleaning, but I did remember to snap a few real quick with my cell phone before we get to making any more changes.
So you can see there’s a little – ok, maybe a lot – of work to do out here.
Ignore the giant refrigerator…it’s going to be for sale soon…it’s a long story…
I’m still working out the details of what I want to do out here, but here’s what I do know: I want white walls, white ceiling, and white trim. We already added planks to the ceiling (they’re not painted yet, but I’ll have pics soon – we were busy little bees last weekend!) and I plan on leaving the beadboard and the exposed siding – I like that it’s all a hodgepodge of textures and I feel like a simple coat of white paint will help unify, clean and brighten the whole room.
Of course, when I first started planning this room, I wanted whitewashed brick floors, clean and bright new windows and a French door or two…and then I had to come back to reality. We still have a front porch, landscaping, and a bathroom to tackle this year – all big ticket items – so this room is going to have to get a much smaller and more basic makeover for the time being.
Kudos to my sweet husband for just listening and going along with all my elaborate plans as I excitedly talked through my vision. He could have squashed my dreams with reality pretty quickly, but instead he kept quiet and let me get there on my own. He’s learned a thing or two over the years. 😉
I’m also going to paint the existing (blue painted) wood floors. I’m not sure if I want to do a pattern similar to this
Or if I want to do one solid color. White on white on white…?
I’m thinking bamboo shades and maybe simple sheer panels for the windows
But I can’t decide what I want to do for furniture. I may or may not like to indulge in an afternoon nap from time to time, so I love the idea of the daybeds in this photo
Or we could stick with a more simple and traditional seating arrangement
I also think I might be allergic to ceiling fans 😉 so I’m on the fence about what to do with that. Jordan wants a fan, but I would much rather hang a pretty new light fixture. I do, however, realize that a fan is the most practical option out here…I have a couple ideas floating around in my head – I’ll put a whole mood board thing-y together when I start getting a better feel of where this is all going.
So what do you think? Would you paint the floors in a pattern or one solid color? What about seating? I’d love to know your thoughts – let me hear them!
