I was so excited about the new wall color in the dining room, I just had to try out a couple new dining chairs to see how they would look. After combining a sale (which unfortunately just ended 🙁 ) and a 15% off coupon, the Anna Slipcovered Chair in Linen from World Market was a deal I simply couldn’t refuse.
So I brought home two. 🙂
Slipcovered chairs are not everyone’s thing, but I happen to love the look – there are a lot of hard surfaces in this little dining room, and I liked the idea of introducing a covered chair to soften the space and add texture.
I have never had slipcovered chairs before, so this look was new to me. To make sure I would like it, I placed one of the slipcovers over one of my wood chairs to see how it would feel in the room. I was happy with it, so the next day I assembled the chairs, added the covers, slid them into place, stood back and thought…
They looked kind of bulky. They were bigger than my little antique wood chairs, and because they were bigger, they hit the table legs and didn’t slide as far under my table as the old chairs. Although looking at this picture now, I don’t exactly see it that way, but at the time…
I did not care for what I was seeing.
I didn’t really care for it at all.
I was almost resigned to the fact that I was going to have to take those darn chairs apart and pack it all back up, but then I had an idea…
What if I extended the table with one of the leaves, so we would have an oval table, instead of a round one? This way, the extra length on the table would make the chairs feel a little more proportional.
So I tried it.
And I loved it!
Not only do the chairs feel like the right size for the table, but surprisingly, the room feels a little bigger too. This room is pretty much a square and always felt a little boxy, but now it feels longer – which compliments the long and narrow living room.
And then just for giggles, I grabbed a wood bread board I had hanging in the kitchen and hung it in the empty space to the right of the window
And I loved that too!!
I am so happy with the progress of this room. I wasn’t aiming for a lookalike room, so it’s not exactly like my inspiration photo, but it does have a lot of the same qualities: soft white walls, rustic wood accents, simple furnishings, natural texture. Will I still make a few changes and tweak things down the road?
Most likely, but I am completely content with where it’s at right now.
I’m not even so sure I need those built-ins. I’m going to sit on that idea for a bit before deciding, but I think the room is pretty great right where it is. Jordan is probably reading this and breathing a huge sigh of relief. Silly boy, does he really think I don’t have a million other projects waiting in the wings? 🙂
I do still want to replace the remaining two wood chairs, however, and I’m still leaning toward a chair similar in style to this. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for a good bargain so I can make that happen.
So here’s the dining room before:
And here it is after receiving its little refresh:
So what do you think of the new chairs?
