I’m super excited to put in new front steps and landscaping for our front yard this year. The siding and shutters have made such an impact and I know these two things will just bring it all home.
In case you’re new here, this is what the house looked like when we bought it in 2011
And here it is last fall (there’s a reason I chose this goofy picture…it’s the only picture I could find that includes the big pine tree…)
And this is how it looks today
Notice anything different?
The big pine tree is gone!
We had it taken down on New Year’s Eve.
While I do think it’s sad we had to lose a tree – it’s going to do so many great things for the front of our house. No more grass that won’t grow. No more uneven front landscaping because one side gets full sun and the other side gets no sun. No more squirrels spring-boarding from the tree branches onto the house to chase each other up and down my gutters at 6 a.m.
Have you ever heard squirrels chasing each other up and down your gutters? So loud!
Anyway, so once springs hits – though to be honest it kind of feels like it’s already here – but once it officially hits, we’ll need to get that stump removed first. Then we’ll tackle that sad little stoop. I’m still leaning toward this look
It feels quaint and cottage-y-ish, right? We’ll extend both the width and the depth of the stairs to give them a little more presence and to make them easier to navigate. Right now you pretty much have to back down to the bottom step to allow the door to open – it’s kind of a pain.
So then once that is all done, it’s time for some landscaping.
And oh boy…
I have absolutely no idea what to do when it comes to gardening!
I know nothing about plants.
Like zip, zilch, nada.
The only thing I am sure of is that I want white hydrangeas. I know, big surprise more white – but seeing hydrangea bushes in other people’s yards stops me every time. They’re just so pretty!!!
I love a white on white look similar to this image
I realize I probably shouldn’t have just hydrangeas, so I’ll probably add in some hostas…
and maybe something to mimic the color and texture going on in these photos?
Just maybe not as full…I think I like everything a little more spaced out…
…so maybe just hydrangeas and hostas to keep it from feeling too busy…
…I don’t know…all you green thumbs out there, am I heading in the right direction??
I am also torn about the idea of window boxes. Sometimes I think I want them because they look so cute on other houses, and then other times I’m pretty sure I don’t want them because that’s just more plants I have to try and keep alive. How do you feel about window boxes? Good idea? Bad idea?
Spring is right around the corner, so the more planned I am, the more likely this is all to get done. Let’s hear it!
