One night last week, Jordan and I were having dinner when I started a conversation that went something like this:
Me: “Can you weld things?”
Me: “Like all kinds of things?”
Him: “Yeesss…?” (said with slight hesitation and a brief look of regret at having answered my first question affirmatively.)
Me: “Good, because I’d like you to make me this.” (At which point I plopped down my most recent Pottery Barn catalog, open to a page showcasing these display cubes.)
That was pretty much the conversation in its entirety…
… and make one, he did.
I’m going to go ahead and apologize now – because I’m about to brag about my husband for a minute. The guy just amazes me. He is the quintessential “Jack of all Trades”. He is our mechanic/builder/electrician/plumber/my hero – and now I can apparently add welder to the list. Not to mention – he’s pretty cute to boot. Ok, I’m done. 🙂
I have been searching forever for something to hang over the headboard. I wanted something simple, but slightly unique, and this shelf delivers on both counts. I found the mercury glass votive holders at World Market, and I love the soft, antique-y way they look with the raw steel that he used to make the shelf.
I’m also excited about the fact that I can periodically change up the display for a whole new look on that wall – no hole patching/paint touch-ups required!
Jordan tells me this was a super simple project. I’m pretty sure he had it complete within three hours, and that’s including the time it took to drive to the store for materials. It also cost less than half of the Pottery Barn version, so it’s a win-win. He assures me that if someone knows how to weld, they can make this no problem. So if you, or someone you know, is a welder, this would be a simple DIY for you!
Of course, the candles won’t always be lit, but it looks pretty just the same…
I would love to see one of these with a piece of antique mirror glass along the back – wouldn’t that be fun??
