When I ordered our new sectional, one of the main things I hoped it would help me accomplish would be to get the doorway that leads to the kitchen opened back up (you can read more about that here). It was closed off by the previous owner – and I totally understand why. This room is long, and very narrow, and the fireplace is oddly placed off center. Functional furniture arrangements are tough in rooms like this.
Before I ordered a new sofa, I played around with multiple furniture options and configurations, and while it may not have been the most sensible choice – I was determined to not only get that doorway opened back up – but to have a sectional in this narrow space as well. What can I say, I love my cozy sofa corner. 🙂
After I thought I had a plan figured out, I had one of the designers from the store come over to confirm that what I wanted to do would work – and she agreed.
But then the sofa arrived…
Technically my plan was going to work, but it was much tighter than I anticipated. Frustrated, I just kind of left the room half finished so I could think about it for a while.
Happily, I think we now have a solution – and it was so simple, really.
We pushed the sofa back toward the bookshelves about a foot or so, which will allow just enough clearance to walk into the room from the kitchen, and still leaves the shelves accessible.
The TV is now moved over to the wall where the door will be and the chair is now centered more in the room. The doorway will be just to the right of the TV – you can kind of get an idea from the above picture.
There is still work to do in here, and the room may never be perfect, but with all the challenges it has, I’m pretty pleased with how it is coming together. It feels so much cozier and complete this way – and it would seem my original plan just might be working after all. 🙂
