Not too long ago, I did a post on our bedrooms. I mentioned then that I had a plan for our guest room (which I do), but it struck me that I didn’t have a plan for our master bedroom – and shouldn’t that come first? I kind of thought so, so I started to think about what I wanted our room to be like.
While I didn’t come up with a clear picture of exactly what I wanted right way, this image popped into my head immediately. I shared it a while back on a Monday Inspiration post…
I love the subtle and soothing colors (or lack thereof) and the relaxed feel and texture of the white linen bedding – it feels like a perfect place to unwind. In fact, when I look through the images I have saved to my Bedroom Inspiration board on Pinterest, most of them evoke a similar feeling with soothing, soft color, white bedding, and simple furnishings. It seemed only natural to head my design plan in that same direction, just taking into consideration that I will mainly be working with my current furniture which is rather dark in color (and yes, there are a couple pieces I would be willing to paint 🙂 )…
This makeover will be done in stages, but most will be immediate changes: new white linen bedding – although I do love my current bedding and plan on keeping it so I can swap it out when I’m feeling the need for a quick change, a new dresser to work with the other two I currently have – we desperately need the storage, new window treatments – I’m kind of liking what’s going on in the first photo above, and a rug that I purchased months ago and just haven’t gotten around to putting down (you guessed it, it’s another jute!). I also want to change the layout a bit, but I’m still measuring to see if everything will fit where I would like it.
At some point, we’d like to tear into the wall in this corner and make a built-in of some sort.
Maybe a built-in dresser or wardrobe-type storage. As far as we can tell, it’s just dead space behind there to accommodate the gambrel roof, so we might as well put it to good use, right?
And even further down the road, I’d love to get a new bed. I’m not completely sure what I want yet, and there are other pieces of furniture in the house I’d like to replace first, so I have some time to think about that. Until then, our current farmhouse style bed will work just fine.
Although I like the current paint color (it’s not nearly as dark in person as it appears in these pictures), I think I’d prefer something a little less gray (I went through a gray phase a couple of years ago and started transitioning all my walls to gray, but now I’m wanting all my walls in various shades of white – this whole paint color thing is a never ending cycle with me, just ask my husband). That said, if I’m going to buy a gallon or two of paint right now, I think I’d rather do it for the dining room or guest room, so the paint color (Sherwin Williams Pediment) will probably stay for the time being. I’d also like to cover the entire room in planks, but I don’t know if I could get Jordan on board with that one… 🙂
This is the first time I’ve had a really good idea of what I want this space to be, so I’m super excited to get started on it. As usual, I want to use lots of texture, neutral colors, and hopefully incorporate some fun vintage pieces I’ve had hanging out in the basement for a while. I plan to start shopping for a few things this weekend, specifically the bedding, window treatments (this is #1 on the shopping list – I can no longer stand the sight of those drapes!), and a dresser. I’ll keep you posted on what I find.
Do you like to plan out your rooms first, or do you like to just dig in and let the room evolve as you go? I think I prefer to start with a basic plan and then just see where it takes me. What fun projects do you have coming up? I’d love to hear about them!
Hope you all have a great weekend! 🙂
