“To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.” – Cicero
I have always dreamed of having one whole room as a dedicated library in my house – complete with rolling ladders and overstuffed leather chairs. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and can spend hours wandering a bookstore, coffee in hand, browsing shelf after shelf, aisle after aisle. There’s something so calming about being surrounded by books, don’t you think?
Our house does not offer the space to accommodate my dream library, but I think the shelves we built along the back wall of the living room are the next best thing…we even designed them to allow for a rolling ladder someday down the road. Will we ever do it? I don’t know, but I’d like to think so. 🙂
Every so often I get the urge to play around with the arrangement on these shelves, and I’ll pull everything off. Every surface of the living room gets covered with books, so that I can start over with a blank canvas. And of course by the time I get the first section or two done, I’m completely over it, and just start plopping things back up pretty much where they were to begin with – there are a lot of shelves on that wall!
So this time when I felt the urge to rearrange, I took a different approach. I left all the books where they were and just turned them around. Now instead of seeing all of the colorful book spines, you only see pages.
I have read article after article suggesting covering books in brown or white paper to achieve a simplified, cohesive look, but I have never been overly bothered by the variety of color from all of my books – it always felt kind of comfortable and laid back to me. Besides, who has the patience to wrap that many books in paper? Not this girl.
Nonetheless, I wanted to see what less color on that wall would feel like. And I have to say, I kind of like it. 🙂
I left a few scattered books with the title facing out for just a touch of contrast, but overall, I like the simple, subtle texture all the rows of pages lend to the room.
Will I keep it this way forever? Probably not, but I’m enjoying it for now!
And before you ask how I will find a certain book when I need to – I’ll just have to keep guessing until I find what I’m looking for! 🙂
