The tour continues today with the room that probably sees me the most – the office. I am fortunate to be able to work from home three days a week, and wanted a dedicated space that could accommodate the needs of my job, so we chose to use the smallest of our three bedrooms as a home office.
This was the “blue room” when we bought the house
It received the same treatment as most of the other rooms – new paint, new lighting, refinished floors, etc., and today it looks like this
I would love to have a different desk and layout in here, but my job requires me to have both company issued equipment and separate personal equipment, so that means double computers, printers, files, etc., and I need a big desk like this to hold it all.
I had the desk from a previous house, but no longer cared for the finish so I gave it a quick coat of white paint to brighten it up.
The old wooden chair was a garbage pick that Jordan scored from a previous job. They were going to just toss it – guess it’s true what they say, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”.
It squeaks like crazy, and could maybe use a little refinishing, but I love it just the same. 🙂
The wall system above the desk is made up of components from Pottery Barn’s Daily System. I fell in love with this system a few years ago after spotting it in the catalog, and have been picking up pieces one at a time whenever I notice they go on sale. It’s perfect for pinning notes, holding catalogs and keeping our monthly appointments at a glance.
We added simple shelves on the adjoining wall for a little extra storage
They are just cheap pine boards cut to size and mounted on top of unfinished wood brackets I found at IKEA. We stained everything the same color, and did a light sanding to give it a slightly worn look. I think we managed to do both shelves for around $25.00 total.
Over on the other side of the room, I use this little cabinet I picked up at a garage sale to hold extra office supplies.
Hanging above is a bulletin board that Jordan made for me where I post inspiration photos and materials for my latest projects (can you guess what I’m working on next??)
An old fan and a vintage office sign (one of my most favorite flea market finds ever) completes the look for now.
My organization techniques in this home office are in desperate need of some fine tuning, but I can never seem to get myself to devote the time required to do it. I’m sure I am imagining it to be a worse task than it probably is, and I know I’d really appreciate it once it was done, but I continue to find reasons to avoid it.
Aside from getting this room organized, the only other thing I really want to do in here is plank the calendar wall. I am crazy for white painted planked walls – I love the charm and texture they add to a room and I think it could be a really nice feature wall in here. I have some long weekends coming up in the next couple of months, and I am thinking I just might give it a shot. I’ll keep you posted. 🙂
