The house tour continues today with the living room. This room is probably my favorite in the house. It is cozy and comfortable and just so nice to spend time in.
I was beyond excited to see a wood burning fireplace in here – I think it was one of the main reasons we ended up buying the house, and we use it often during the winters. The fireplace originally looked like this:
The bricks were pretty blah, so we painted it the same white as the ceiling and trim (Simply White) and gave the screen a quick coat of black spray paint to bring it all back to life.
We also changed the stair banister and newel post. I don’t normally like to change things that are original to a house if I don’t have to, but the original one completely lacked character to me, so Jordan and I came up with a new design and I love the statement it now makes when you walk in the front door.
There also used to be a built-in shelf along the stair wall
We knew we wanted to do bookshelves along the back wall so we removed this shelf right away. The shelf was actually built in to a doorway that leads to the kitchen, and a prior owner closed off the door after the house was built. At some point I would like to open this door back up, but I’ll need to wait until we have a smaller sofa in order to do that.
Probably the biggest change in here, are the bookshelves. It was one of the first projects we tackled after moving in, and I love how they add some dimension to this long, narrow room.
We don’t have a family room, so the living room is our TV room as well. I didn’t want the room designed with the TV as the focal point, so we keep the TV tucked into the corner on a cute little piece I rescued from my parents’ neighbor’s garbage – never underestimate the power of paint and new hardware!
I love the paint color in here (Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray), but I’m ready for some new furniture. I’m happy with the tables and accent pieces, but the sofa and chair need to go. I think
I have we have settled on what I we want (ok, so maybe I’ve done all of the picking out – but to be fair, I did ask for Jordan’s opinion) 🙂 , and once that actually happens I see the layout of this room changing completely – but we’ll save that discussion for another day!!
